How long should it take to remove the acoustic ceiling texture in my home? It depends on the size of your home. Usually it takes one full day. Larger homes may take 2 to 3 days. You can also do the removal room by room, or split it into 2 different days. Whatever is more convenient for you and your family. Priming and painting your ceilings should be done the day following the texture application. How much does it cost? Some ballpark figures: A basic acoustic removal & re-texture (machine applied) on a vacant home runs anywhere from $1.10 to $1.50 per sq. ft. As with most companies, the price fluctuates regularly to stay competitive. A furnished home will run slightly higher. The complete process, including primer & paint runs about $1.70-$2.40 per sq ft. Several factors can effect the bid you receive for your particular home. Also, the price for the re-texture varies depending on the style you choose. Factors that can effect price are: whether or not it's furnished, high ceilings, woodwork/paneling, wallpapered walls, visible patches, obvious defects in the drywall, etc...Certain custom hand textures are more expensive. Remember, when you are measuring your square footage, you only include actual measurements of the ceiling area you want removed. This number is lower than the square footage of your home. Don't include areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, garages, or any other area where acoustic isn't present. OK, how do I measure the square footage? With a measuring tape, measure the floor space of each of the rooms in your home (length x width.) This is generally the same as ceiling space, unless you have sloped/vaulted ceilings. When you measure these types of ceilings, you "flatten out" the room (theoretically.) The number of feet (over 8 feet) on the tallest side of the room is added to the floor measurement. Then calculate as you would for any other room (length x width.) Remember, don't add in any measurements of rooms where there is no acoustic, such as bathrooms, kitchens, etc...When your all finished measuring each room, add up all the numbers and voila! There's your square footage of ceiling. You could call a few contractors with this number, some basic information about your home and they should be able to give you a rough idea of what it would cost to remove & re-texture your popcorn ceiling. |

Why on earth do they put acoustic up in the first place? Well, quite frankly, it was cheaper for the builder. Acoustic texture really hides a lot of imperfections, so less coats are necessary when finishing the sheetrock joints. A few decades ago, it was in style. Some people still prefer the look of their acoustic ceilings. Why should I have my acoustic ceilings retextured? Its entirely up to you and your family's preferences. Some people just don't like the look of it. It tends to make a room look darker because each little kernel of acoustic creates a shadow behind it. Acoustic is very difficult to clean...spider webs stick to it like crazy. Vibrations in the environment, such as large trucks and equipment, winds, doors slamming, etc, can cause kernels of acoustic to drop from the ceiling, leaving delightful white specks everywhere. Allergy sufferers find that removing the acoustic lessens their symptoms. Some specialists say that the acoustic also harbors microbial pests and germs. Another reason is for ease in repainting. Popcorn ceilings should be painted with an airless paint sprayer, a pricey piece of equipment most DIY'ers don't have just laying around. I had the acoustic removed in a few rooms of my home by a company and the ceilings look striped, even though they painted them. Why? What you are seeing is the difference in the absorption rate of the paint into the joint compound, the texture and the sheetrock. Paint will soak into these substances at different rates, causing a difference in its final appearance. Even after several coats of paint, this "checkerboard" effect may remain noticeable. The contractor needs to be knowledgeable about finishing as well as painting the new texture. A suitable primer, quality paint and proper application technique will eliminate any problems. This prevents subsequent coats of paint from absorbing into the ceiling, eliminating the possibility of striping. I am really concerned about hiring a contractor. I've heard so many horror stories. How do I know I'm hiring a reliable, experienced company to remove my popcorn ceiling? A crystal ball helps (just kidding.) Honestly, some intuition is your best defense. If something sounds fishy, it probably is. Trust your instincts. Just because you're new to hiring a contractor doesn't make you a fool. Any contractor who tries to make you feel stupid or intrusive just because you ask questions should be avoided like the plague.
